i have **so many **mixed feelings about *borat. *is this absolute madness and does it make me genuinely laugh out loud? yes. is it grotesque and getting just a bit too politically incorrect for my tastes? also yes. but is that also the entire point of the film? arguably yes. so it’s good, “very nice,” as borat would claim, but it’s also so absurd and frightening and disgusting. happy (early) 20th birthday, *borat!** * i might have to bring this up to a 3.5; i hate rating movies :/

*“…he tells me that everything is erotic, that everything is sexual. you know what i mean? he tells me that even old flesh is erotic flesh, that disease is the love of two alien kinds of creatures for each other. that even dying is an act of eroticism. that talking is sexual. that breathing is sexual. that even to physically exist is sexual. and i believe him…”* not a clever title or a clever poster, but *shivers *is cronenberg’s first full length film, and it’s obvious that he discovered his niche even this early into his career. gooey leech-like creatures, buckets of blood, and an epidemic of possessed, sex-crazed people. it’s unique, grotesque, and fascinating.
