Sonny Boy
“life’s just about to begin.” now where do i start 😭😭
what does it mean to lead a life you’re satisfied with? what does it mean to reach for the stars? out of all the branches of possibilities of what your life can be, how do you know you’re climbing the correct path? and as you drift through your teenage years, what determines and influences the direction you take in life, a compass?
sonny boy deconstructs and breaks down, teenage confusion and uncertainty into metaphysical worlds. weaving in the laws of physics, philosophical ideas and religion, in a seamless yet complex way. every single narrative idea and plot point, every single object and thoughts of the characters, are injected with so much metaphorical and allegorical meaning, that evolve over episodes, all concerning the fact that humanity is full of convolution and contradictions, that our ontology is unpredictable.
*“we can’t change the world anyway, so everything will be fine.” (nagara in episode 2)
*“the world cannot be changed after all, but that is why this is the world i choose.” (nagara in episode 12)in these 2 quote, i choose to interpret the worlds as 2 different worlds, one is the original world (representing childhood and how they can never turn back time and go back to being children), and the other, a world nagara and mizuho created using their abilities, narratively literal (to serve the plot that people will never stop drifting in life, and it’s up to us to be comfortable with our circumstances), and metaphorical in the sense that in order to live a life that we are satisfied with, we have to create a world for ourselves, we have to create a space in society for ourselves, a space where we can be free, uninhibited and unhindered, to chase our dreams, be ourselves, and live a fulfilling life worth living, devoid of regret.
“don’t worry, even if just a little bit of the you from that island remained, everything will be fine.” (mizuho in episode 12, looking at the viewers, seemingly assuring us)despite the millions of interpretations, the message of the anime remains the same, everything will be fine. continue drifting through life in search of your purpose, continue being lost, continue making mistakes, continue fighting for a future you believe in.
just like nagara, mizuho and nozomi, build a rocket and fly beyond the boundaries of your world, with hope as your compass, and find a place where you can belong, where you can live meaningfully, where you can be yourself authentically.
“standing here now and looking back, there were countless possibilities, each with its own element of randomness. if we had dwelled on that, we would no longer be able to distinguish what we truly want.”
