Another
Dogwalks any „Final Destination“ movie **badly

„Another“ is one of those „classic“ horror anime, along with „Higurashi“ and while I do have my qualms with the show I can’t deny that watching it for the second time now is definitely an incredibly entertaining experience.
It starts of with a well made setup. The atmosphere is quiet and eery, many different mysteries and possibilities of what is happening to this class are explored, all while the show makes us question the existence of the deuteragonist.
And then, when it seems like the show is getting a bit stale it hits us with one of the most insane death scenes I’ve ever seen. I bet that anyone who’s seen the show can remember exactly how they reacted to seeing that introduction death for the first time. It was unexpected, gruesome, creative and frankly it’s one of the most awesome deaths in Horror history and I’ll die on that hill.
After that the show finally picks off and doesn’t slow down. the remaining mystery boxes are either explained in the next few episodes or they kind of shove them aside for later. Anyways, what we now get is a decimation of our cast, filled to the brim with disturbing death scenes and when you think it can’t really get worse the last three episodes happen.
At that point there is only one question left the show has to answer and to the fortune of the viewer the remaining characters solution for that question is to start massacring each other in horribly brutal ways while they are in a scary mansion in the forrest with no phone signal.
In all seriousness, these last three episodes and the bloodbath that takes place in them are horribly rushed and burn down the foundation and atmosphere of the show (literally). But damn, they do it in the best way possible.
Apart from the mystery and atmosphere the show offers, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack, as well as the animation which holds up to todays standards pretty well.
Also, the character design looked slightly weird, but it did fit the show and also I guess it comes in handy, that the characters have long necks when they’ll get pierced by multiple objects or twist in really nasty ways.
Overall „Another“ is no masterpiece in writing but it delivers what it wants to deliver and it’s kills always stay in my head for a long time.
