Gunbuster
Flawed masterpiece
The first like 5 episodes are a solid Gundam. The artstyle is really gorgeous, the big robots are cool and I’m a fan of the world building. Also the soundtrack was really sick. Like come on, you’ll mix great citypop with SciFy and sample the goddamn Russian national anthem for an ost? Hell yeah, I’m so in.
Still, like my title suggests I also have my problems with these episodes. It is very rushed, which is kind of inevitable given the shows length, or more so the lack thereof, and I’m also not the biggest fan of the feelings Coach and Amano have for each other.
But then that last episode just hit me like a truck. The whole thing is in black and white and now instead of scenes to show of the characters breasts (I mean we also get that but let’s ignore it for the sake of argument) we get two generals arguing over the existence of god, humans debating if it’s okay for us to obliterate an entire species for our own survival and we actually get to see how much the fact that most of her friends are aging and dying faster then her affects Noriko. And finally we get an actually incredible conclusion, among multiple surprisingly emotional moments in this episode.
So overall another great 80s OVA and I’m sad we don’t get many of those anymore.
