whoever did the editing I applaud you for ruining this entire documentary.

fun garbage

Wow. I honestly can’t remember the last time I walked out of a DCU movie feeling this positive. Great job, James Gunn. The Good:The acting was phenomenal across the board, Nicholas Hoult in particular was incredible. The writing was solid, and the story struck the right balance of fun and heart for a Superman film. I asked my family what they thought afterward, and unfortunately, they didn’t quite grasp the message. My sister even complained that “Superman got beat up too much.” But that’s exactly the point, the whole message of the film is about humanity. I also loved the vulnerability shown, not just by Superman but by the people around him. There were moments, especially with kids, that genuinely brought me to tears. That emotional feeling is rare and appreciated. The Bad:The CGI was hit or miss. At times, it looked stunning, but there were definitely moments where it looked noticeably fake, which broke immersion. While it wasn’t constant, when it did happen, it was distracting. Also, can we stop with the whole “hurting dogs for shock value” trope? It’s overdone. Not just because it’s upsetting to watch, but because it’s lazy writing. Instead of developing a character as evil through actual complexity, writers just make them hurt animals and call it a day. It’s tired, and I hate it. The ending felt rushed. It didn’t ruin the film, but it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. And lastly, the jokes. Honestly, about 70% of them didn’t land for me. The Peacemaker cameo and Supergirl’s return were hilarious and had genuine comedic weight, but compared to Guardians of the Galaxy, this definitely isn’t Gunn’s strongest comedic work. On the idea of Batman x Superman:Frankly, I hope to God this never happens. As much as I loved this movie and am giving it a high rating, I really want Batman to stay separate from this universe. The Batman and The Penguin have been the best Batman-related content in years, and I hope Matt Reeves and Peter Craig continue building that world on its own terms. Let James Gunn keep creating amazing, comic-book-feeling Superman movies, and let the Batman cook in peace separately.
