High and Low
It’s hard to comprehend what Kurosawa could’ve done with today’s technology. How is it possible to make still black-and-white figures so compelling? How does he evoke distress in a man that doesn't do much except turn his back? I’m not even sure if the humble Kurosawa knows himself. He has always considered himself a student of the craft right up to and beyond his honorary Oscar. He never wasted time wondering. It’s just simply “go.” I know he won't admit it but this film proves it takes nothing more than pure passion and a little ingenuity to craft a complex, multi-layered story.
From the classics I’ve seen; The Shakespearean epic Ran; The exuberant Seven Samurai; And the spine-chilling High and Low; it takes no comprehension to understand that he's something special. A real genius and God-given gift to cinema. That's why he’s the goat. The goat!
