Lady Bird
Greta Gerwig creates absolute magic with this film. It is a deeply moving, incredibly funny, and remarkably honest look at adolescence and the complicated bond between a mother and her daughter.
Saoirse Ronan is spectacular as Christine, the rebellious high school senior who insists on being called Lady Bird. She brings so much heart, wit, and vulnerability to the role. Her dynamic with Laurie Metcalf, who plays her hardworking mother, is the true soul of the movie. Their arguments feel so raw and real, yet you can feel the intense love underneath the tension.
The dialogue is sharp, the soundtrack is perfect, and the early two thousands nostalgia is beautifully captured. It manages to feel incredibly specific yet completely universal. Anyone who has ever struggled to find their identity, clashed with their parents, or yearned to leave their hometown will find a piece of themselves in this story.
This is an absolute triumph of modern cinema, and it never fails to make the audience have fun, cry, and appreciate the messy beauty of growing up. A perfect film.
