professional film critic. sorry in advanced for being pretentious in my reviews i’m actually deeply unserious irl

on paper, the themes and plotline of this film seem like it was made for me. a coven of witches working in a clothing store at a mall is camp and fun and refreshing, and i was a big fan of all the casting choices. i went into the film expecting something like the craft for gen z. however, as much as i wanted to love it, i couldn’t help coming out of the theatre underwhelmed and a bit disappointed. maybe my expectations were too high going in - i knew it was going to be a bit corny, but the messy execution and underdeveloped plot was just not doing it for me. i could see where they were trying to go with this film - a comedic, witchy commentary on performative solidarity and toxic female friendships, but it really just didn’t drive the point home for me. i still love the cast and i thought it was entertaining enough, but it definitely had the potential to be a lot better in my opinion.

well damn i was successfully ragebaited by celeste. much more entertaining of a watch than i anticipated, but i guess i should’ve expected it with such big names in comedy working on this film. devon’s character is getting a lot of hate for being too much of a pushover, but honestly her behaviour is pretty realistic for someone who grew up not having any real friends. she was very eager for social validation and getting a friend as “cool” as celeste makes you do crazy things for their approval. i saw a bit of my past self in devon and that got me emotionally invested in her story. it really sucks that billy bryk’s character turned out to be such a sleazy asshole because i really liked him in the first half. also the last 5 minutes are insane because why is she in JAIL and her cellmate in MEGAN THE STALLION? nothing could’ve prepared me for that ending

a gripping, sinister show with such a fresh plotline about the horrors of marrying the wrong person, with the stakes multiplied by a thousand. it explores marriage as an institution, the concept of soulmates, generational curses, female intuition, and fear of commitment. it poses the question: if you knew you would die if you didn’t marry your soulmate, would you still go ahead and marry them? the cinematography and music seamlessly work to build the eerie and intense feeling of inexplicable dread that rachel feels as she prepares for their wedding, and all the small, odd mysteries rachel faces finally come together in such a satisfying way. camila morrone puts on a brilliant performance, and i am a fan of when films end in women smoking and driving away. absolutely shocked me when jules and nellie ended up being soulmates. my biggest take away on this is to never cut your pinky toe off for a man.

actually really entertaining if you look past the absolutely absurd plot 😭 my favourite part is when she set her LITERAL SECONDS-OLD NEW BORN BABY down on a piece of floating fucking wood so she could fight some sharks. that was comedy gold daphne bridgerton
