The Thing
rewatched this because i realised i actually had no memory of the plot, thought it would be a chill way to kill time on a random wednesday morning. big mistake. genuinely traumatised now.
i always remembered this movie being good, but i forgot how horrifyingly stressful it is. the tension??? the paranoia??? the body horror??? the DOG SCENE??? it’s so deeply unpleasant in the most incredible way. like it genuinely got under my skin and stressed me out IN MY OWN HOME because you feel like you’re slowly losing your mind along with the characters.
carpenter really did his big one with this. it’s so quiet and still at times, then suddenly disgusting and loud and wet. like why is everything so wet. the practical effects are still some of the most upsetting shit i’ve ever seen in my life because everything is twitching and melting and screaming and i hate it so much but also give the FX team a raise 40 years later.
kurt russell in a snowstorm with a flamethrower is cinema and i respect how the film doesn’t waste time trying to explain anything or save anyone. it’s just pure survival and suspicion and men crumbling under pressure, accusing each other, slowly realising there’s no way out I LOVE THAT.
also the ending is still perfect and ambiguous in the bleakest way because there’s no hope. it’s just two frozen guys staring each other down like “well damn.”
i rewatched this for fun and now i’m stressed 10/10 would recommend but also why did i do this to myself. show this movie to your young children ❤️
