Rushmore
This movie feels like a bunch of ideas, some good, some stupid, some both, thrown together and strung out for way too long. The premise is somewhat interesting, but it could've been 30 minutes long at max. Even the soundtrack that everyone praises, while ofc still being good, isn't that interesting compared to rest of Anderson's movies. The reason I like his other stuff is that it doesn't follow the classic structure of dramatic low points and uncomfortable situations purely there to keep the audience engaged. Also, in his other movies, every character trait is specifically put there for a reason. This one doesn't have any of the things that I usually love, and has everything that I love to find missing in his other work. Main character is not charismatic enough to get away with being so annoying, and neither him nor Bill Murray's character deserved the good ending that they got, cause they didn't get any redemption at all. With all this being out of the way, I can still see why this movie is a cult classic, it has something magical in it despite everything I just said. The cinematography is a massive step up from Bottle Rocket, you can clearly see that Wes has found his style.
