Red Beard
"there's a belief that if you call into a well, you can call a dying person back. wells lead to the bottom of the earth."
oh god, this fucked me up. this squeezed my heart tight. i dont even know how to describe it.
the relationships of this movie made me feel both warm and sad, especially when it came to otoyo and yasumoto. i couldnt hold back the waterworks when i saw just how gently otoyo stroked yasumoto's hair when he was sick.
another example of a relationship i loved was yasumoto and red beard. im an absolute sucker for mentor/mentee dynamics and theirs was perfect. absolutely fucking perfect. the final scene is the most heartwarming shit ever put to fucking film.
there are so many scenes in this movie that broke me. sahachi calling out to his dead wife as he was dying, the nurses who once chased around a little thief calling out his name in a wish for his recovery, otoye's recovery from her trauma and the clinic's staff chasing away her abuser, yasumoto's character arc from a selfish, self-centered asshole to a kind, gentle, and impossibly loving doctor who chose poverty over guaranteed prosperity because it meant helping others.
i cried like a bitch. this is easily a new favorite movie of mine. somehow, even after all this gushing, i still feel like i havent expressed the extent of my love for this movie. this is probably my new favorite kurosawa film. im probably gonna make everyone i know watch this with me. im probably gonna think about this movie for a very long time. im devastated.
