Jaws
*“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Wow. I don’t know how I went all my life without seeing the iconic classic that is Jaws. I’ve found yet another amazing Spielberg film.
*
Jaws* takes place in a small town called Amity Island, a town known for its great summers at its beach. When a large shark begins to terrorize the numerous beachgoers of the town, it’s up to chief of police Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), an ichthyologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and an old, run-down seafarer (Robert Shaw) to kill the deadly beast.
This film is nearly a masterpiece. It is very suspenseful, and has a great share of scares. It was fun, exciting, entertaining, intense, and blah-blah-blah. I’m going to stop, because I could say a million adjectives before truly describing how great this film was. I can see why it is a classic, and that term is well deserved. This film essentially invented the blockbuster, and it still feels like one. I can see this movie coming out today and see people lining up to see it, for it is just that good.
Surprisingly, though, the shark is very rarely shown on screen. I say that as a good thing, though, for it makes the scenes where it is on screen much more exciting and intense. And that intensity is just amplified by the score. The score was spectacular. Everyone knows the classic: "dun dun dun dun" music that just feels so intense, and when you see it in this film, it fits so, so well. John Williams has scored some of the most iconic and best film scores, and his work in Jaws is absolutely no exception.
The film could create so much fear and anxiety surrounding sharks, sometimes in just simple lines of dialogue. Speaking of dialogue, the dialogue in Jaws was near-perfect. It felt very real, like there were real people talking, saying things that real people say. None of the jokes were forced, and none of the quick-witted lines were either. That was just one thing that added to the sheer greatness of the film.
The performances by Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw were phenomenal, but I felt that Richard Dreyfuss was the standout. His performance made his character feel like a real person. Not only because of the dialogue like I mentioned, but even with mere body movements. It’s just perfect. All three actors did a great job portraying their characters onto the big screen, and the characters themselves were really well-crafted as well.
From the first frame to the last, Jaws was nothing short of amazing. It was such an exciting film, and I can not wait to watch it again. Steven Spielberg, you have managed to blow me away yet again.
