Signs
I’m so glad that I finally got around to watching Signs. I wasn’t even sure if I’d like it, but wow. This film blew me away and left me in awe.
Signs follows a farmer named Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), who wakes up one day to see a giant and intricate pattern of circles and lines in his crop field. Though he tries to brush it off at first, him and his family (Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin, and Abigail Breslin), slowly begin to realize that this is something that cannot be ignored. It’s something that may change their lives forever.
Signs is the second M. Night Shyamalan film that I’ve seen. It has an impeccable script, great acting, and astounding suspense. I was thoroughly invested in this film and it’s characters. My favorite character might just be Graham Hess. He not only had a spectacular performance embodied by Mel Gibson, but he also kept my attention with the things he did. He was terrified for almost all of the film, but did not want to show his children that. He tried his hardest to stay strong, which made the punch much more impactful when he did show his fear. The development of all of the characters in this film was quite frankly tremendous. Each and every character had their own little unique things about them, and you start to notice that those little things all play a crucial part in the film as it unfolds.
This film also has really awesome suspense in it. It did have a few scares, but they didn’t overdo it, and they were all very affecting. But the suspense is where it’s really at. This film featured some sincerely nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat moments. The alien was very rarely on screen, so the other scenes in which the alien was present but not shown were phenomenal.
The script of this film blew me away almost as much as the film itself. M. Night Shyamalan has made yet another original and phenomenal script, that was perfectly brought onto the screen.
I’ve heard that Mr. Shyamalan has made some pretty poor films over the years, but at this point, I am nothing but amazed.
