Abel Ferrara’s grimy portrayal of New York is filthy and filled with morally bankrupt murderers, junkies, and rapists. At what point can a sin not be forgiven? Bad Lieutenant contrasts the sacred and profane in ways so jarring it is at times disturbing. The film is an unrelenting downward spiral into depravity, but delivers a religious message of hope, empathy, and mercy.
