Autumn Sonata
This is is a perfect movie.
(Ingmar) Bergman’s warm images so effortless encapsulate the beauty of cozy nostalgia, that later become bleak and wintered. Ingrid Bergman’s performance is perhaps the best performance of any actor I’ve seen. Throughout the film we’re shown portals of Eva’s life and the extent of Charlottes neglect in dramatic confessions and conversations. By the end we’re left asking ourselves if these conversations proved productive at all. Is Charlotte capable of growing out of her narcissistic nature, and has Eva benefited from admitting her trauma? We’re left unsure.
