Poor Things
I was really apprehensive going into this, and put off finishing this movie for so long. It was such an uncomfortable watch at times, but I can recognize the value in that. While I have some issues with how Bella's relationship to sex is portrayed throughout the film, and how excessive those scenes seemed to be, I understand the broader message of a woman exerting true agency without being bothered by societal expectations and pleasantries.
I suppose I take issue with how "true" Bella's agency really is though, since I would not say she really understood for a good portion of the film the comprehensive reality of her actions. She effectively has the brain of a child after all, which makes this such a difficult watch. There is value in who a child, or just anyone naive to the world around them, is guided by. I very much wanted to see her experience the world with Harry and Martha, and I believe who she is by the end of the film would have as well.
Overall though, I am glad I saw it through. I really appreciated when she put the goat's brain in her ex-husband. Love her for that.
