A misguided but earnest exploration of mental health, David & Lisa is operating off of the limited knowledge of its time period. This creates some hokeyness in regards to how mental illness is portrayed overall, with some performances being too over-the-top, but ultimately the film does humanize its subject. The rich imagery on display is striking and eye-catching as well. I can understand why it received the nominations it did

As much as I dislike a lot of the soundtrack (the dopey-ness of it all is near unforgivable, imo), the moments of father-son bullshit between Godzilla and Godzilla Junior are rather fun. Special effects might have taken a fumble and some of the fights lose their tension as a whole and the human element is diminished, but I can’t really bring myself to hate too much of it
