The Fly
i have so many things to say about this i have never been so disgusted yet so fascinated and overwhelmed at the same time.
went into this knowing absolutely nothing about the fly except when for isabelle’s little fun fact about how flys regurgitate ? to keep themselves cool, thought it was an interesting piece of information but never would i have thought i would see it happen in the film.
the certain graininess and quality of 80s films are so magical to me i just love how they feel and FEEL i did. hate hate hate body horror and gore but i just can’t peel my eyes away from the screen.
every single moment just made me feel so so viscerally and physically sick. every whispered swear, jerk, twitch, and squirm in that plush cinema chair must have been felt by harry angus and jordan poor boys.
the little discussion of the discomfort of the body w izzy matthew emma harry was so interesting i don’t think i made the connection of creator vs creation until it was pointed out to me. brundle really is a monster of his own design and for him to cling on to the last perceived “success” that he had with veronica in order to maintain some phony sense of control. i’ve always been fascinated by the idea of telephone-cable-machine-god and we really get to see how sad and pathetic it is, a half life that isn’t one to be lived at all.
did i feel a little embarrassed about how surprisingly emotional i got? sure. did i lose aura in front of basically the whole world and my professor by bawling about the film and how grossed out and sad i got? definitely. did i love the whole experience? yes yes yes i wouldn’t have traded it for anything else.
watching this was like willingly being tortured and crying felt like pure absolution, washing me anew. i’ll have to watch this again.
