Anora
This film captures why I initially fell in love with the art of filmmaking. it’s a wild provocative and daring ride that pulls no punches in its set up and execution. I love how this film played with this warped perception of love. we get this crude and glamorized version of love in the first act for everything to come crumbling back to reality in the second half. When Anora finds what she perceives to be true love in a sea of superficial love she experiences throughout her job, she fights for it until the illusion ultimately wears off. I took the ending as her finally accepting this isn’t the type of love she wants anymore. A hug of comfort rather than impulsive car sex. I really hope Sean Baker continues to make these deeply grounded human stories as they are the most unique and entertaining content i’ve seen lately in a sea of sequels spinoffs and cgi blockbusters.
