The Brutalist
bow down to brady corbet.
fantastic direction a beautifully shot film and timeless themes at its core. i particularly loved his use of capturing natural light and this wide range of shots from the expansive mountains or construction sites to the intimacy of dancing to jazz with a friend or getting intimate in a private club.
the idealistic notion of an american dream will always be false. it is a glass house built upon the structure of the country which is greed lies filth ego and blind pride. this is literally shown throughout the story of lazlo and his wife but i think perfectly metaphorically summarized by the inverted cross we see as the last shot before the epilogue
speaking of the epilogue my absolute favorite part was they finally revealed the intention and motivation behind lazlos designs. taking back control over a space he was oppressed in and making sure it would never happen again. the epilogue also highlighted the recognition some immigrants don’t get for their work until extremely late in their life or even after they die.
this film was truly a labor of love and dedication. best of luck for best director and best picture 🙏
