Atonement
No wonder I shelved this film in my watchlist for so long. All it does is shatters your heart. I can definitely tolerate sad endings, but this one left me on the verge of tears. The soundtrack, the scenery, and the acting all coalesce into a masterpiece that takes such a hold of the viewer. From the very beginning I could feel that Cecilia and Robbie were bound to be unhappy. This is the type of films that offers no hope that things will eventually take a good turn. It just draws a realistic picture of war and the agonies it brings upon those who are separated from their lovers and long for their gentle touch. It does break your heart and leaves a huge hole in it. But it does so beautifully that it never leaves your mind.
