Midnight Mass
This show is amazing and infatuates me with a feeling i haven’t in a long time. I’ve only felt complete awe for 5 pieces of media, that being, Beef (2023), Interview With The Vampire (2022), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Behind Her Eyes (2021), and Suspiria (2018), and I thought I wouldn’t face another series/movie/book that could capture the same feelings i felt the first time I watched these pieces of art. I hate to get all talkative when i write reviews but truly I could talk about this series forever.
This series captures theology and vampirism but in a way i didn’t know could be done. Not once was the idea of this so called “angel” being labeled as a vampire or something of monstrous origins ever spoken amongst the characters but still its absence only made this series stronger. To call them mere vampires and move on would honestly take out a big spark in this show. We not only see the avoidant of basic evildoers but it’s praised because the people crave “miracles”. Being in such a mediocre village, apart from the mainland, which we rarely ever got a feel of might I add, plays a big role in the development of false deities. The church craves relevance and nuances so it only makes sense why the characters were so excited to see a new person, Monsignor “Hill”, visit their little island. Riley’s mother mentions it in the first episode, this town was fulfilled with hundreds of residents, now it’s a handful. In their excitement of a new pastor, they grow idolization, they see him as the authority to deliver them. I understand some people find the dialogue to be restful but the dialogue and the pacing of this show also plays a part as monsignor grows the trust, the faith, with the convenience and in doing so by the appearance of the angel, majority of the people weren’t as afraid as they should be nor were they really an inability to turn most if not all of the residences of Crockett. Overtime, Pruitt drunk the citizens with the blood of the angel so in time, everyone will be “righteous” in their in divine body.
The technicality of the vampires blood being passed amongst the people is also a thing id like to mention. As we can see Erin had it worst of all, something thats supposed to be a blessing comes as a curse and takes her only success, away. Dr. Gunning really broke down the fictional logistics of vampire autonomy and its weakness to sunlight so that will forever alter my perception on vampire movies. Riley’s death was so perfectly placed. I can’t even say more on it, it was just perfection.
Now lastly id like to discuss the uproar, the scene that really struck with me, which was the angel reveal to the church. Everyone’s reaction was so raw and nice to see these ranges of expressions to an unknowing phenomenon. Big round of applause for the actors really. Love this.
