Microcosmos
I don’t know how to put this into words exactly, but Microcosmos manages to somehow depict the the idea of something unknown to such an extent to make you reflect on how little we as humans understand about the world around us.
There’s something enchanting about the way it cuts between each of the individual segments, always giving us as viewers a sense of scale, both micro and macro as the camera might pan into the clouds or night sky stars, and linger on those shots to let that scale sink in. What really sold me on it was the occasional sound of church bells or certain shots with tiny churches in the background if you squint hard enough.
All of that subtext paired with some of the most insane shots i've seen in recent memory alongside a mesmerizing soundtrack makes this probably the best nature documentary i've seen.
