*This was, with out a doubt, the most perfect night I’ve had in a long time… but I don’t deserve it.* Logan is a film that is brought up often when discussing the best comic book films ever made, and it has earned its mention tenfold. Unlike other finale films like Endgame or No Way Home or Justice League, Logan doesn’t need to rely on build up of a franchise to leave an impact on audiences because it doesn’t try to be like other superhero films. That may be its best attribute. Choosing to be an Action Drama with a western setting already sets it apart from every other hero before it - an inspired choice that really makes James Mangold’s vision shine. The direction is wonderful and there isn’t a bad looking shot in the movie, each scene so beautifully lit and a great expression of how our characters feel in that moment. The writing is sharp, slightly comical when it needs to be but a perfect amount of heartfelt and gut wrenching. No monologue given feels shoehorned in for the sake of exposition or just trying to tug at the viewers heartstrings; they either clearly contribute to the plot or let us know how a character feels in their weakest moments. Speaking of characters, there is no bad performance in this film. Hugh Jackman is always a delight as Logan and he doesn’t pull any punches (literally) when needed. He clearly knows his character well to where everything he needs to feel is so clearly expressed to the audience without it being grating. Patrick Stewart is also phenomenal in every conceivable way. Coming from experience of living with and seeing a parental/grandparental figure in such a hurt state is so difficult, and every scene with Charles in reminded me of that in the most heartbreaking way possible. Shame neither actor got an Oscar nomination for their performances because they killed it. Usually I’m one to get annoyed easily by child actors, but holy shit Dafne Keen playing Laura Kinney absolutely stole the whole movie for me. I have a bit of bias, of course, as Laura in the comics is my all time favourite Comic character. She holds a special place in my heart and always will. But Keen brings her absolute A-game for this film and you can tell. Laura is a complex, disturbed, heartbreaking character and has been since the very beginning and Keen is able to show that so clearly. You can tell how innocent and lost she is beneath all her rage, you can see how conflicted she is between just being a kid and having to care for Logan and Charles, and that’s exactly who Laura is. She blows every other performance out of the water for me, and seeing a child actor so spectacular is such a treat in a movie like this. Even if I do have minor gripes with the villain, this movie isn’t about good vs evil or a world ending threat that must be stopped. This is a movie about family, about love, about finding purpose in others and your own life. That’s what superhero’s should do - help us as audiences find that thing to keep us going as good people. I’m not usually one for long film rants but Logan deserves it. If anyone ever asks me what the best superhero film is, this is my answer and probably always will be. 10/10, might watch again when I emotionally recover.
