“*It's just I've been waiting on this day for... my entire life. I thought I'd feel different.*” ──── ୨୧ ────

“*Some people are just born with tragedy in their blood.*” ──── ୨୧ ────

“*You think you're a rebel? You're not a rebel you're fucking psychotic!*” ──── ୨୧ ──── Every “Heathers” rewatch I contemplate adding it back to my top four, it just gets better and better each time. While dated in its period beliefs, the comedy and acting transcend said beliefs with a crisp edge of satire, unusually present in an eighties film. While a dark comedy on the surface, the campiness present within “Heathers” doesn’t take itself too seriously, something many other films of the genre struggle with. Winona Ryder as the main character, Veronica Sawyer, may very well be my favourite acting performance of all time. She plays an all too snarky but sweet teen with a detrimental future so well, and she is the glue the movie needed to succeed in my opinion. Without Winona, I don’t think Veronica would be as redeemable. Winona’s interpretation of Veronica’s true love/lust after mysterious J.D. feels real, raw, and we as the audience become just as enthralled in his psyche as she does. The other performances are amazing as well, wirh Christian Slater’s J.D. my favourite across every medium. I adore the musical Heathers, but the movie beats it in every way, almost every delivery could stand its own, where the musical has a lot of pacing issues and strange beats where they don’t need to be taken. I love “Heathers” exploration of toxic relationships and abuse, especially within high schools. Many people romanticize the wrong aspects of this movie. It does not glamourize J.D. or excuse him because of his own traumatic upbringing, it instead allows Veronica breathing room and develop friendships and real connections outside of him, the message that should receive the attention and glamorization. Overall, “Heathers” is a perfect film. The costumes, the dialogue, the disturbed yet intriguing premise is so unique and individually scary, and every performance given furthers some great aspect of the movie overall. Nothing more to say, except WATCH THIS MOVIE.
