Eraserhead
- Road to Halloween: Oops I took too long and now the Road To Halloween is like one movie.
- Terrific horror film, amazing that Lynch had such a handle on his craft with this as his debut film(!!!).
- Such a deeply upsetting film, I don't remember every event on this movie but I certainly remember how I felt. There's a few jumpscares but for me, the horror lies in how disgusting everything is, feels like Lynch is cutting past traditional Hollywood horror scare tropes to tap into our primal fears; the uncanny valley and disgusting diseases.
- The puppet design on the Baby is amazing, I have no clue how Lynch pulled it off on such a small budget but it's amazing, especially the boils on it are just viscerally disgusting and uncomfortable. The same disgust goes for the Woman in the Radiator, the character design is just inherently spooky and is so uncanny valley.
- Speaking of the Woman in the Radiator, all of her scenes are just so creepy. The scene where she's waltzing back and forth, stomping on the sperm coming from the sky is just such a good tension building scene while also being, I think objectively the creepiest thing ever.
- The prop design and makeup department as a whole is amazing, the bleeding chicken is horrifying in the way it convulses and spurts and the Lever-Pulling Man's disgusting face disease is so creepy and the makeup makes his one jump scare the best thing ever.
- The best element of this film is 100% the sound design. I can see how they spent a year on it, it's so meticulously crafted to make you uncomfortable and feel Henry's anxiety with him. The best scene in this regard is the scene where Henry is talking to Mary's mother and you can just hear everything; the heavy industrial sounds from outside, the disgusting Styrofoam-like squeaking from the dogs(?) as well as the ambient white noise/silence in the room, as no one dare to speak, just a masterpiece in that regard.
- This expert sound design is present throughout the whole film, never are you left alone with your own thoughts, you're always burdened with the heavy atmosphere of Henry's white noise thoughts too, really great horror tool to never let us sit alone.
- The best sequence in the film is obviously Henry's hallucination sequence, being the most abstract and the most traditionally scary of the film, the Lever-Pulling Man's jump scare as well as the Henry head are just too good !
- Thematically, I think this film is obviously about the horrors of unwanted parenthood. Personally, I think the Woman in the Radiator is an expression of Henry's delusions that a miracle solution is possible, that there's a single thing he can do that will make all of it go away. Ultimately, Henry embraces these delusions and loses his humanity in turn, choosing to live in a fantasy where he can be with the Woman in the Radiator in heaven rather than reality.
- The cinematography of the film is also excellent, particularly in the opening sequences establishing the hell-ish industrial landscape as well as the hallucination sequence.
- Too difficult to describe the genius of this film in words, truly a visceral emotional and spiritual experience of this film, think less, feel more type beat.
