Superman
Still marinating my thoughts on it but for the most part this rips like all fire
*Okay I marinated enough.
I had a negative response to the original title ¨Superman Legacy" and was happy when it was shortened to just Superman but after seeing the movie I now understand why. Why the original title, why it was changed and why the original one made sense.
This is not the definitive Superman movie, this is a new Superman movie. And that is okay.
All the elements are here, enough things are similar and enough things have changed. As someone who finds the slice of life / serialized / coming of age elements of superman way more interesting than seeing him fight a rogues gallery this pleased me greatly. Falls more in line with something like "My Adventures with Superman" (which I loved) than something like "Man Of Steel" (which I hated).
This is what Superman should be, goofy, hopeful, in love with the world. It didn't have to come out the gate swinging to be the best Superman story, only one that would begin bringing back honor and roots to the timeless character.
It is also one that stands strong enough to begin building a universe around. This is a Superman that I want to see lead a Justice League and meet up with other characters.
Weirdly enough my only issues fall with Gunn's directing, which ironically was what I thought was going to be the best part about it. There is an inconsistent tone and speed in the first half of the movie that really did not work for me but the stronger second half and one heck of an ending more than make up for it. Ending is so good it makes you forget that the start of the movie, as well as it's set up is bloated as all hell. Too much stuff going on that seems more focused on setting the playing field for future movies rather than showing us this Superman.
Really want to see it again (on IMAX hopefully and see how it comes together).
