Dancer in the Dark
i LOVE this kind of camerawork; when a movie feels more like a documentary or a collection of old home-video footage you randomly stumbled upon. the shaky shots, the close-ups... it always pulls me in and makes me feel like i'm right there with the characters instead of just watching them.
Björk's performance took that feeling to another level. she didn't just play selma; she made me feel the weight she was carrying. the way she portrayed the constant clash between hope and a world that kept crushing it was genuinely heartbreaking.
i'm not exaggerating when i say this might be the most emotionally devastating film i've ever seen, precisely because of how painfully real it feels. and somehow, this being a musical makes it even more draining. it wasn't an escape from the tragedy, it made the contrast between salma's inner world and her reality even sadder. every song felt like the last bit of hope she had left, which made everything hurt so much more. i don't think i'll ever forget it.
