Backrooms
BIG SPOILERS
After my first watch of Backrooms on release day, I believe that this film carries an effective and abstractly presented commentary on generative AI and how certain people find themselves getting lost in it. It is directly shown that the rooms are endlessly copying our world until it is almost unrecognisable, stealing various parts of it and morphing it together into a disturbing and dangerous nightmare. Clark is pulled into this through his dissatisfaction of the real world; his dreams of architecture have been thwarted as he struggles to accept the harsh reality of his work, home life and alcoholism. I believe that he reflects those who become dependent on AI in everyday life, becoming progressively more attached to it as it is further explored and expanded.
I am aware that this is a pretty surface-level reading, but it seemed to correlate so well that I couldn’t ignore it. I’ll need to give it another watch soon; I’ll definitely pick up a 4k release if it happens.
Class film.
