The Thing
Gross, disturbing, brilliant.
John Carpenter's masterpiece has a lot going for it. Getting the obvious out of the way, the practical effects are leagues above anything released at the time or at present; they are utilised in such a masterful way that even today they depict a disturbing, menacing and powerful creature. The score and acting creates an immense feeling of tension that feels as though it never breaks through the duration of the film. Kurt Russel is obviously the main character, however that can be easy to forget at times as each member of the cast has their own scene stealing moments.
The story of the film and lore of 'The Thing' is as incredible as it is ambiguous. The ambiguity however, is what is so fascinating; the film strikes a perfect balance between giving you answers and leaving you with questions, if there was any more left to the imagination, or to the contrary answered, I don't think the film would work even close to as well as it does.
Overall, this is an amazing display of imagination, creativity and pure horror.
