Shōgun
Ever since Game of Thrones ended networks have been trying to replicate what HBO accomplished. None have come remotely close until now. Shogun is so very close to perfect because it understands that what makes epic television is not necessarily huge set pieces and action every episode. In fact, it’s worth noting there is not a single battle sequence throughout the series. Where Shogun thrives is through conversation and intricate schemes for power.
Rooted in philosophical intrigue, Shogun is often an exploration of the meaning of life vs death. Coupled with religious themes, Shogun seeks to determine if how we die is just as important as how we live. Absolutely phenomenal camerawork and sublime acting, especially from Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano, demonstrate just how seriously this show was taken by not only FX, but everyone involved.
