Eighth Grade
Wow, what a great movie. I love how the narrative of different parts of her last week in middle school are being like narrated through YouTube videos, which I’m guessing was a choice based partially on Bo Burnham’s own career. Kayla’s relationship with her dad was so sweet. It’s a pretty accurate portrayal of middle school and how social media is intertwined in all of it, I specifically loved the scene of Kayla’s dad trying to comfort her during what seemed to be like an anxiety or panic attack. When she asked her dad if she made him sad, I fully bursted into tears. It’s obviously normal during this middle school era for kids to kind of push away their parents, but I think what many people can relate to is when in some cases, people get over that stage and reconnect with their parents. It was lovely to see Kayla’s dad open up about his wife leaving and ugh, it’s just so precious to see how much he cares about her, the way his face lit up talking about her. I wish I actually got to watch this movie when I was in the eighth grade, I think it would’ve just hit me a bit different but either way, I’m mad for putting off this movie for so long.
Anyways, Gucci! 👌
