what in the la la land FUCK was that ending 😭😭
i’m so serious right now . . . HOW CAN IT END LIKE THAT??! someone’s gonna have to explain it in a way i can comprehend it or else i’m moving this down to a 4. i’m actually speechless.
everything was so peak though. but with that ending, i’m gonna have to figure out how to wrap my mind around it. if anyone has any advice, PLEASE leave a comment.
mr. wenders, you are a DEEPLY disturbed individual.
and a random side note: i need that evian billboard.••edit: i have a bit of a better understanding now that i took it upon myself to watch a couple videos and sort of condense what was a mess in my mind, to something cohesive and digestible. this will remain at 5 stars. and i’ll throw in a little confucius “quote” that someone referenced that helped, for my future self looking back at this, or just whoever: “wherever you go, there you are.”••VENT SESSION INCOMING (not mandatory reading 🙂) (also probably not all that coherent):
i kind of feel like doing some analysis actually so i’ll just vent because i can. back to that confucius “quote”, it doesn’t matter where you are, you will be burdened by yourself. a change of scenery isn’t gonna change you. it’ll be cool and refreshing for a little while but you’ll pretty quickly end up back where you were. in the movie, it’s obviously portrayed as a physical traveling back to where he was. you can’t run forever. and with that same idea of being you wherever you go, it’s not even just your own personal things that go with you. you are made up of what your parents grew up with and what your grandparents grew up with, whether it’s a lot or a little bit. there is some of that in you. and to go even deeper, it’s not just them as people, but “them” as generations. the people like travis who were growing up and a part of that “golden age” in the 50s and 60s where there was a lot of change, ended up in the 70s and 80s where things they were all told was “good” or “bad”, wasn’t necessarily true. you can go into the history a lot more if you want but there was a generational shift where this idea of a perfect nuclear family with a husband that is like an ideal man, just isn’t actually possible the way it was portrayed. and travis realizes he can’t be that, and never could be that. and to move on from travis and think about myself on an individual and generational level, both the mistakes and good things i do will make their way to my children in some regard (if im blessed with any of course), same as the mistakes and good things gen z does. impressions were made onto you, and you will impress onto others that come after you. that’s just how it is. and that’s both sad and beautiful in different ways. and as far as hunter goes, i think whether he met his (and is presumably gonna live with his) mother or stayed with his aunt and uncle, a core part of him was going to be the same either way. he said he doesn’t even really remember his mom, to his biological dad, who he also didn’t really remember. and that’s how those things work a lot of the time. you don’t HAVE to remember something to be impacted by it. that’s why i came around from the thing a lot of older adults specifically say, “why take your little kids to xyz, they won’t even remember it!!” like that’s not the point, as children, we don’t remember most things, but we know that our nervous systems and brains are molded by those early years and have a profound impact on who we are. if you’re actually still reading this, you’re an angel. i’m really just venting.
the one thing i’m not sure i’ll be able to get my head around (good/bad), is what happens after travis leaves? is he just leaving them forever? cause then you get into the “well, that’s what he did last time and forced jane to give hunter to his aunt and uncle before!”. so if it’s just like a visit thing? i guess that would be nice. i understand travis and jane can never be together again the way they were, but i really did just wanna see if they stay connected or how they interact with hunter after the fact. part of me just really wishes we got some sort of epilogue where things can just be spelled out. but i also love that they’re not.
ok im done.
