Overall a good movie but it definitely had its issues, for the first 20-30 minutes of the film it was extreamly hard to get immersed and actually grabbed by the plot. I think it’s a combination of the casting choices and set / costume designs. Every time there would be a dialogue between two characters I wasn’t able to see them as the characters they’re supposed to be representing, I would just think “oh that’s tom holland” or “is that travis scott?” (I understand the significance of a rapper playing the Bard, I just think it should’ve been someone else). Another thing that bothered me was just the accents, i’m not saying that i expected them to talk in accent greek but not even doing any accent at all just really made it that much harder to get into the movie ( same complaint with the armor and clothes but not as bad) It feels almost as if Nolan doesn’t trust the main audience to watch a movie like the odyssey without big hollywood names and armor with “aura”. Although I do think that the performances from these actors help with these issues a lot (Anne Hathaway and Robert paterson stole every seen they were in) After I was able to look past all of those issues I did find myself glued to the screen, the scene with the cyclops had me on the edge of my screen the entire time and was done amazingly, but that brings me to the next issue. This movie is one of the most inconsistent movies i’ve ever seen, one minute i’m absolutely locked in and the next i’m thinking to myself “can they just move on from this part”. I think a lot of this stems from nolan’s struggles as a writter because a lot of the dialogue heavy parts is when I started to get pulled out of the movie, I think the parts with Odysseus and Calypso struggle with this a lot. The last act of the movie was very good however. Overall a good movie that is visually stunning and definitely worth watching, it feels like it’s so close to being a 10/10 movie but so far at the same time if that makes any sense.
