Coco
“Remember me, though I have to say goodbye
Remember me, don't let it make you cry
For even if I'm far away, I hold you in my heart
I sing a secret song to you, each night we are apart
Remember me, though I have to travel far
Remember me, each time you hear a sad guitar
Know that I'm with you, the only way that I can be
Until you're in my arms again, remember me...“
A vibrant, powerful reminder of what Pixar are capable of; truly meaningful and culturally empowering - this film was probably a lot of people’s first impressions of Dia de los Muertos and I think a lot of Mexican’s would not mind that.
Hector and Miguel’s story is beyond any other told in the Pixar canon, family has definitely been a focus of many other Pixar films but not quite in the same way - the idea of being forgotten after death is a second kind of death. Dealing with loss and grief in ways other films cannot, this is why I love animation, especially Pixar.
Giacchino once again lends us his magnificent composition - truly one of the best composers alive.
I would die for Dante, Pepita and Frida Kahlo’s monkey
Now that I know Coco 2 is being developed here is what I would love to see:
Miguel as a famous singer/actor is brought back to Santa Cecilia from Mexico City after being visited by his family (Hector, Imelda and Coco) because the town itself has been forgotten. He turns it into a resort and makes a shit ton of money and donates it to various causes.
