Interstellar
“Ranger 2, prepare to detach.”
“What! NO, NO! Cooper! Cooper, what are you doing?”
“Newton's third law. You've got to leave something behind.”
“You said there were enough resources for both of us!”
“We agreed, Dr. Brand... ninety percent.”
This film balances dread and hope excellently - Prof. Brand telling Murph that he lied combined with Zimmer’s score leading into Murph’s breakdown and outburst, recording a message that falls onto the ‘ears’ of a machine rather than the intended audience; the whole segment with Dr. Mann and his desperation to leave the planet he was delegated also makes you fear that the movie will end without humanity being saved, even on a rewatch. From that moment of dreadful realisation to the ending of the film - it just builds and builds.
I was really late to watching this film, I must’ve been 16 or 17 when I first watched it and I knew bits and pieces but actually watching it was fucking awe-inspiring, you feel the entire weight of humanity and its fragility in this film - whether you like Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker, you physically cannot deny this film has MEANING.
Great way to start February.
