Sentimental Value
“Why didn't our childhood ruin you?”
“It hasn't always been easy for me.”
“But you've managed to make a family. A home.”
“Yeah. There's one major difference in the way we grew up: I had you. I know you think you're incapable of caring, but you were there for me. When mom was down, you washed my hair, combed it, got me to school, I felt safe.”
I was not prepared.
Joachim Trier is a seriously brilliant director - this film just envelops you in a depression felt by many of its characters.
Renate Reinsve proves that she is one of if not the best actresses of this generation - she should definitely earn an Academy Award nomination for her role and performance.
Stellan Starsgård is ridiculously good (to be expected, of course) but there’s something more about his performance in this film - the way he silently reacts to other characters, especially his daughters, really takes this role to a different level.
If you can see this film in theatres, please do (especially if you have siblings).
