The Witch
Goodness, this is electrifying.
Let’s fast-forward to 2024, Eggers unwraps his fourth pre-modern fable - Nosferatu. In my eyes his adaptation serves as his worst picture and for good reason actually. He merely started off too strong.
Time to rewind, we shall look at Nolan’s poker hand: FollowingHaven’t seen it but I know discourse around it is rather negative. Then check out Fincher’s hand: Alien 3. God damn.Kubrick’s hand should be alright: Fear and Desire. Ughhh, nope.Cameron’s hand is purely iconic: Piranha 2 The Spawning.Other hands on the table are from Brian De Palma, Edgar Wright, David Cronenberg.
I get it, It’s totally normal to flop the first time. Rarely a directional debut ever surprises the audience. Exceptions are Lynch’s Eraserhead and Chazelle’s Whiplash, but who else could do the same, really?
Eggers’ The VVitch.I discovered only recently that the title is spelt that way due to the lack of usage of the letter in the 17th century. That is next level creativity. Ever find it weird how his filmography becomes less dark overtime? The Lighthouse is also spectacular, the fact that nothing like that was ever made beforehand. His early works represent a massive portion of him, The Northman is slightly sidetracked but Eggers hammered it down and proved his ability.
Anya TJ’s refreshing beginning to cinema, with plump cheeks and a freakishly amazing/horrifying entry-level performance. Compared to her latest role in The Gorge (2025), I can only watch and smile. Maybe let laughter escape my jaw but I’m not feeling it today. Her recklessness can be forgiven though, for Furiosa. It was epic and I’m glad she was a huge part of it. Still, there’s room for more, so do better.
96/100
Man, I’ll say this. New horror classic that will stand the test of time - The VVitch earns that label easily.
