“We are not horses, we are humans. And humans are…”
I originally interpreted that last line as Gi-hun being unable to define humanity because he gave up on humanity. Gi-hun replayed those games with the intention of saving every single player- but at the end of the day, greed and corruption won. When given the choice between money or the lives of others, money won every damn time. Innocent people lost their lives. A mother killed her son. The first and last time a father held his baby was while he was threatening to drop her to her death. Humanity has proven to be corrupt in every conceivable way during those games. What are humans? How can Gi-hun describe them after witnessing all of this. How can Gi-hun define what it means to be human? I think that’s why i initially thought he couldn’t finish his sentence- because he couldn’t bear to describe humanity in a positive light. But i think there’s another way to interpret the quote. I think that Gi-hun still saw the good in humanity. He witnessed both ends of the spectrum in those games. Yes player 333 was willing to kill his own baby, but the mother of that baby sacrificed her own life for that child. Yes a mother killed her own son, but it was to protect two innocent lives. Humanity can’t be defined. Not just because it’s corrupt but because it’s everything- the good and the bad. It’s impossible to define what it means to be human. Because “We are not horses. We are humans. And humans are…”
