Columbus
Truly one of the most gorgeous films I have ever seen in recent years,
Although the film doesn't really translate well into writing. It is a mood piece that should be experienced rather than talked about.
Columbus is a mundane story; it is something that could happen to anyone which is why we can resonate with the events that happen to the two characters. Essentially, this film is a love story. Except, instead of falling madly in love and running through the streets screaming 'I LOVE YOU' while holding hands and falling, in slow motion, into each other's arms onto a bed of freshly plumped grass, it is realistic and mature. Kogonada has brilliantly portrayed their love in a way that is honest and simple and, in the end, we are left with the exchange of 'Thanks. For everything' ... 'Thank you. For being here.' It leaves us feeling nostalgic and hopeful.
I have never been a fan of art-house indie, however, this film has made me not only rescind my view on the art-house genre but also rethink my judgment on all films in general. The cinematography and color palate used in the movie completely fleshes out the film to a point where you never want to take your eyes away for a singular second. After finishing the film, there was an intense feeling of melancholy that remained with me for the rest of the day. No other film has ever elicited this sensation before and I doubt that any other ever will. Thank you Kogonada.
