Sing Sing
This was really really excellent and there’s some seriously powerful stuff within it. The supporting cast are all brilliant, and knowing the are playing themselves really adds to the emotional gravitas of some of story’s they tell and the feelings they pull on.
Coleman Domingo is fantastic here, there’s so much emotional depth to his character.
Early on, we get the impression that he is the most experienced member of the group - this is his world, his forte. He even makes a point to tell the newcomer that "this is all these people have." It’s a release for them and a connection to the outside world, beautifully punctuated by the line: "Men don’t often get a chance to be vulnerable."
However, it becomes evidently clear that this program is a vital coping mechanism for him, too. You can see his internal agitation when the newcomer auditions for and wins the role of Hamlet, yet he puts on a brave face, as actors do. This "performance" is later challenged with the piercing question: "And are you acting in this interview now?" Domingo’s performance is so strong because he shows us exactly what is hiding behind that mask.
There’s so much to admire from a technical perspective too, it’s shot beautifully and i adore the grading.
