*Hokum* did something that is very rare for me, it made me genuinely like and enjoy a modern horror film. The horror genre now relies too heavily on high concept plots and/or jumpscares, just for the movie to completely fall apart in its final act (looking at you, *Longlegs*). However, I can happily say that *Hokum *refreshes the concept and (mostly) sticks the landing. Adam Scott is terrific in this. Despite being used to the awkward characters he generally portrays, he kills it as a douche author dealing with serious familial trauma. *Hokum* manages to draw audiences in and keep them at the edge of their seat for its entire 100 minute runtime. Damian Mc Carthy seamlessly combines terrifying folklore horror with character-driven storytelling. All in all, this was one of my favorite theater experiences in recent memory.

*Kick-Ass *still remains as a rather fun and inventive take on the superhero action-comedy genre. It essentially paved the way for having franchises like *Deadpool* and *Kingsman*. This film capitalizes on its premise and is just a totally fun movie to watch. It doesn’t explore any deep themes or have any real character growth, but that’s fine. *Kick-Ass *is exactly what it needed to be.

I can’t say I enjoyed this exactly but it’s fine and that’s fine with me.

You know you’re watching a masterpiece of film when you check your watch, expecting it to be the halfway point of the movie, and it turns out that 2 hours have passed. There’s not much else to say that hasn’t already been said about *Fight Club*. It’s Fincher’s best.
