Irreversible
Woah
Gaspar Noé didn’t make this with the faint of heart in mind, this is definitely the most gruesome, disturbing, and tragic film I’ve seen. Irrèversible challenges everything you’ve been taught about film, it’s reverse chronological format is a first for me, and personally I think it only really works for this film. I couldn’t imagine it working with anything else.
The one thing they don’t tell you about in this one is the experimental cinematography. I’ll be honest I almost got motion sickness from the club scene alone, but I really found it to be extremely useful when transitioning from scene to scene. The only time I’ve seen this effect was in the A$AP Forever music video(really good video btw).
The atmosphere of Irrèversible is something I haven’t seen many people talk about, it’s extremely frantic, and makes you so anxious. But once you get to the second half of the film you feel euphoric and calm. I highlight this because most films it’s the opposite, usually it’s calm and then frantic. But I feel as if this film does it better than most, the club scenes made me anxiously sick. I think the cinematography and set design contributes to this point massively.
When talking about irréversible you have to talk about the underpass scene. I think we all know what happens here and if you don’t know just google what the 9 minute scene in this film is. It’s so disturbing I don’t even want to mention what it is. Now I have seen people have a lot of takes about this and some people think this scene is used as a plot device. Now personally I think this is a metaphorical film, I think Gaspar Noé made this to show how something so violent can happen at anytime. On top of that I think this was made to show 🍇 as a violent crime and not a sex crime, which I feel this generation maybe doesn’t understand/realize.
I feel like the average rating of this film is held back by the infamous 9 minute scene here, I think this is genius film making. I also feel like there are some really nice parts of this film too, like what’s technically the beginning of film where it’s just Cassel and Bellucci at their home is some of the best chemistry I’ve seen between two actors. The party scenes were extremely fun aswell.
I’ll be honest I’d prolly never suggest this film to anyone unless I think they could handle it. This is a great film though, I feel like if it was less disturbing it’d be in the top 250 narrative films on Letterboxd, because when I see someone say they don’t like this movie they more just talk about how much they hate that scene in particular.
**Disclaimer**
I just want to disclose if I didn’t come off clearly, the most controversial scene of this movie shouldn’t be taken lightly and I understand people hate the film just because of it. To be clear I only watched around 30 seconds of it just to get the jist. I am in no way encouraging what happened whatsoever and condemn people doing it in the future.
