Deranged lovecraftian ex or mentally ill parasyte of a mother or all of the above? Initial Thoughts The film is very similar to The Machinist but it's so contrived that it just really isn't that good. The whole drip feeding of information across a 2 hour picture just for the character to end up in some white light purgatory is quite played and honestly boring. The music was quite decent and I liked it very much. The cinematography was amazing. Mise en scène was notably great as well a scene that comes to mind is when she opens the door expecting to see her daughter on the couch during a reverse shot but her booty call comes into view from the right of her head or the placements of David throughout the film. Narrative leaves a lot to be desired and I really think that ending as ambiguous as it is doesn't do much for the film unfortunetly just left me feeling disappointment because I thought that the hour and 40 minutes I just invested was truly going to pay off but to no avail. Just turns the movie into theorycraft rather than a compelling piece, and yes I do have a few of my own but that doesn't even pique my interest even more I just find myself bored at how spineless the writing could be. I feel like the Machinist tale of guilt works because at least you actually have something concrete to work with before you branch off. Here you genuinely have nothing because everything is so otherworldy and without proof and or valid explanation. Cast is really small and other than Rebecca Hall who I still believe really leaves a lot to be desired even though she does all the heavy lifting in this film I think a lot of the acting is abyssmal. I think the role of David was heavily underperformed and the film felt like it could really use more active extras.

They're calling this the worst film ever made. They might be right. I had no knowledge of the BTK killer before this so we'll even leave that aside. The film decides to attempt to shift the suspension of disbelief from the viewer watching the film to the people who made the screenplay leaving them asking how on earth was this dogshit released? It's riddled with plot holes, it has some of the worst plot progression of all time. And the twist if you can even call it that is just pathetic. I still haven't researched the BTK killer but if this is 100% based on true events I'm not even sure I want to. Also not even a gripe with the movie itself but I just fucking hate when film sprinkles in the devout Christian gimmick for it to become one of the main dilemmas of the film. Mother has the acting skill of a spruce tree. The dialogue is the worst thing I've endured this week. The films saving grace is the whole does he know does he not know dilemma but it doesn't even fucking work because he always knew but decides to be an iqlet anyways. You can't paint someone to be a coldblooded intelligent tactical killer that taunts the police and have them goof around on-screen and get thwarted by two children's mild interest, it's pathetic and a slap in the face. That's even a good fucking mention 12 women have perished and I don't think I saw a single fucking cop for 2 hours. On technicality this isn't even a 1/2 star film but holy shit nah I can't do more than that for anyone who thinks that ending is fucking acceptable. They need to be bonded and have a plastic bag put over their head and see how that feels. What a joke.

Now that I am a competent human being I rate this film even more highly, this is probably one of the best films ever made. I can't sing its praises enough it just captures you from minute one. You could rewatch it many many many times and still have something new to say. The visuals and cinematography are stunning but one thing Lynch projects like this and Blue Velvet have away from his surrealist MO is the fucking music man. I genuinely don't know how he manages to do it so flawlessly, if there's an afterlife and I meet him he's staying on aux I don't care. I could say so much more but it's probably been said in a thousand YouTube videos before so I'll just save it. But I got Lynch over Jesus Christ he's genuinely put up more buckets. Like I've seen this before and it bangs better than the last time. Before I compared a lot of his work to Hitchcock but rewatching this today it is most definitely something entirely different and a monolith in it's own right. I think I'd appreciate Vertigo even more now. I'm going to stop typing now because I might be here all morning.
