Sally Rooney is not for everybody. She has a very clear target demographic: UK/Irish based, character driven with tht melancholic vibe to it. I personally enjoy her works because I'm into character based stories. Rooney's stories are hugely on character dynamics while throughout time having to overcome challenges such as navigating life and people around them. I find those type of stories and characters comforting. Her works may seem boring or frustrating due to awkward miscommunication for others.
Adaptation wise, this was mediocrely disappointing. Highly doubt people are going to remember this adaptation or the mini series alone. Just seeing the trailer made me not so hyped about it. The chemistry lacked. It was so hard for me to care for at least a single character. The tone was quite far off from the source material as well. It's such a huge disappointment because Hulu seems to be doing pretty well with their book to mini series adaptations. I am also not a fan of the music choices in the show. For a book that's geared towards people in their early 20s, it felt like they were trying to appeal to teens who are heavily on social media. Phoebe Bridgers' track saved it and the only one that made sense to me. However could've been better. Lastly, I am not a fan of that poster.
Joe Alywn's screen presence carried for the most part considering he doesn't do much. He's good as a leading man. I'd be interested to see him in more works in the future. There were some visually calming scenes and shots in the show which I really liked. If you're bored on a weekend night, just grab some wine and watch this for the vibes I guess.
Just read the book and leave it to that. It's a very easy and simple read anyways.
