Lady Bird
I'll never get tired of this film. Oh the nostalgia rewatching this...It's the many little thoughtful things that Gerwig was able to do within 1hr & 34 mins. Not a single minute wasted. This film literally includes everything I love when it comes to movies. That inner joy realization that there's finally a film you can call an all time favourite of yours. Such a special feeling to love a film so much before Oscar or awards szn recognition. This is the one movie I think/talk about the most bc that's how much I love it and bc that's how much it touched me. This film had such a deep impact on me. **

Its enjoyable, original, comforting, good balance between comedy & drama, the screenplay & acting feels so real, character driven, it has style AND substance, outstanding direction (considering it's a directorial debut), perfectly paced, feels personal yet has this universality, includes emotional realism, tackles authentic relationships between friends, family and everybody that orbits around a teenage girl and self discovery. It's simple yet speaks such volume. It got the private catholic hs experience & atmosphere RIGHT. Female lead doesn't end up w anybody romantically which is rare in teen flicks. So refreshing it has nothing to do with romance/rom com in a female driven film. It focuses more on family & friendships instead. It's an absolute breath of fresh air seeing a protagonist who doesn't have a sugarcoated & glamorized lifestyle and look, unlike other previous teen flicks/coming of age films. The characters may not be perfect or easy to watch but they feel real. None of the characters are b&w, like us humans, there's a lot of greys in us. I love how the love interests (if you think about it) weren't the common "heartthrobs" you see in other movies/TV. Loved seing an artistically driven alt girl be into a male tenor and softboy bassist.
When it first came out, it was a year before my senior year in high school. I felt prepared in some way bc of this film. I got to watch it a few times again. Watched this again before I entered senior year. Then I watched it again after I got accepted to colleges. Then ofc watched it the day before I started university, that viewing just hit me the hardest because I lived through transitioning from young adulthood to new adulthood. I clearly made it a tradition to revisit this film before the school yr starts lol. You can watch this at any time in any mood. This film is so special to me. It just felt like it was made for me. Thank you so much Greta!!!
Edit [Feb 2022]: why did I only noticed now that there's two Kate Bush cover albums and two Wes Anderson movie posters on her bedroom wall... what a taste. Lady Bird was literally written for girlies like me :')
