One Day
I barely remember the previous movie adaptation. I have the book on my TBR.
This was an unnecessary remake(?) It made no difference. You didn't need 14 episodes. I think 10 or 12 episodes would've been better. I was not convinced the characters were in their post post secondary era. It got better starting from episode 7 and onwards.
From an outsider's perspective, this felt like any other UK show for people in their 20s.
Mod did a great job with the character. She captured the eccentric energy of Emma. However... I'm really sorry to let this out: this is not the "representation" I'm here for. This is proof that you can't replace originally white characters with a POC. Even if the character had nothing to do with race, there are subtle traits and life dynamics that still make it "white." I'm here for escapism by not having to see negative stereotypes and stories that don't involve trauma. This was just so unrealistic. The story takes place from the 80s to early 2000s and you're telling me there was no dose of casual racism or racial conflict?? Esp with interracial relationships. What makes it more unrealistic esp for a brown girl, was the lack of family and education that was presented in the series. That's the least you could do. You cannot tell me Emma had it this easy as a brown girl. I also think it's not right seeing brown girls who are in white spaces being seen as horny and sexualized as well (example: Avantika/Karen in Mean Girls the movie musical).
