Wicked
Wicked was many people's most memorable stage viewing experience. This musical changed the lives of many people and inspired them to push themselves artistically or personally. One of the most successful Broadway musicals that has also brought different generations of people in one place which is the theater. I always tell non theatre people that this musical is good for anybody. Whether it is first timers, tourists, theatre kids etc. It is just such a beautiful tale that demonstrates different themes such as friendship and political corruption to the oppressed. The production design and music are aspects that many people can understand the beauty of this story that is easy to follow and very memorable. The lore of the cultural significance of this musical is just so beautiful. From The Wizard of Oz to the Original Broadway production.
This movie adaptation has been pushed years after years. One of the reasons is possibly the decline of sales in Broadway/West End/National productions. I agree and disagree. Many musicals with movie adaptations continue to still do well on the stage. This musical continues to run in the Gershwin theater til this day. I also believe that it really was just about timing. What’s so beautiful about many musicals is it really is just about timing and the direction it could change to be revised even after years running on stage. Anybody can be Elphaba, Glinda or Fiyero. As to why there’s been multiple versions of these beloved characters. We’re here now with the brilliance and passion of Jon M. Chu. Chu was able to build a magnificent ensemble cast and immersive Oz. Everything was just so magical.
As somebody who grew up in the early 2000s, Wicked was MY Hamilton. You never get tired of Wicked. Once in a while I would replay the Tony's performance of Defying Gravity with Chenoweth and Menzel. I had to culture my younger sister who knew Chenoweth and Menzel as Maleficient and Elsa. My sister is quite familiar with the music. I have my own personal background with musicals/theatre as an art form but Wicked was the musical that made me understand what truly was a “Broadway production.” No wonder so many people rewatch the stage version and/or re listen to the OBC album.
This was the shortest 2hrs and 40 mins of my life. I watched this 4D with my sister who is not a major musical fan but she likes old Hollywood. We both purely enjoyed the 4D viewing experience. The last 10 minutes of the film was the most epic musical sequence I've seen. The most memorable theatrical experience I've had in ages. It was a full house in the cinema. This was meant for the big screen.
Every actor brought nothing but all a 12/10 performance. This was not only well adapted, but brought smt new to the table by bringing in more depth and paying homage to previous versions/source materials. Boq and Madame Morrible had more screen time than I thought. This film had more fantasy elements than the stage production.
I look forward to the second part. 361 days worth of intermission. And I hope to see more cameos too.
