Happiness
A man's paradise is a woman's hell.
In the first scene, a family is walking towards the camera in a gorgeous park. They look like the perfect nuclear family. But as they walk closer it keeps cutting to a flower, on it there's a bug likely eating away at it. I think the scene's purpose is to lull the audience into a state of false security. But her the bug could be some sort of warning that something is wrong.
We see French Bill Hader (FBH) fall in love with another woman over the course of the movie. His wife is completely in the dark, why would she suspect anything? He still treats her well and SAYS he loves her. The music throughout the movie is cheerful which continues the façade from the beginning.
When he's talking about what he loves about his wife FBH can only name things she does for him, not what he loves about her. Which really begs the question, did he ever love her? FBH is insanely manipulative, the music and tone do a great job convincing the audience of his bullshit as well.
But once his wife dies because of his infidelity, you never actually see him cry. He gets to pawn the kids off to a family member and we watch as his mistress takes the place of his wife. As this happens the music gets louder and clashes, almost making you feel sick. We the audience can see how morally bankrupt this is, but for some reason the characters can't. It's as if he's being rewarded. In the final scene, they go to the same spot the family was at in the beginning. They then walk away from the camera.
This movie is about how much privledge men have in patriarchal societies. The whole thing is portrayed through FBH's perspective. Women and children are props, they are status symbols to show other men. That's why the kids never cried, they were nothing more than set pieces in his life. If something (or someone) breaks, you get a new one. People never cheat because of their partner, they do so because of their lack of respect and selfishness. His wife was perfect, but she still was never enough.
I'm going to finish this off with a quote:
