Stalker
I have a lot of feelings about this movie. It has to be one of the best scored and shot movies I've seen. Like every shot is gorgeous, no hyperbole. It is weirdly paced, it felt like an eternity and short at the same time? Very confusing feeling. I think this is the dumbest I've felt while watching a movie ever. I am no english/film major so figuring out what this movie was about was a bit of a struggle but here's my stab at it.
I think it's exploring 3 common human philosophies and pitting them against each other. The Stalker seems to represent religion, the Professor seems to represent logical reasoning, and the Writer seems to represent more emotional thinking. They butt heads a lot and each try to explain the weirdness that is the Zone. They do end up conceding to what the Stalker says, since neither of them can understand. I am personally not religious, so I interpreted this as an allegory to how humans understand our current universe. Sure, science can explain a lot of how things work but we currently don't have the language to explain EVERYTHING yet. Which I think is where religion comes in. I think humans get overwhelmed by the sheer weirdness and uncertainty of our world and the thought that a being like God is controlling/made everything is a soothing thought. This is backed up by the fact that historically religions over the years have attempted to explain less and less as our knowledge of science improved. I am not sure if this is what the author or director intended, but that is what I will choose to think.
There was also something in there about how getting everything you want can be bad, but to be honest I was too busy thinking about the religion angle. I need to rewatch this sometime whenever I can. Fantastic movie.
